2024/25 Brazil First Corn Crop 52% Planted vs. 53% Last Year
Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.
The first corn crop in Brazil was 52% planted as of late last week compared to 53% last year according to AgRural. This represents an advance of 4% for the week. The first corn crop in south-central Brazil is rated in good condition.
At least 75% of the corn in Brazil will be safrinha production and the question is will the delay in soybean planting result in lower safrinha corn acreage. Farmers in Mato Grosso now have planted 55.7% of their soybeans, which is up 30.6% for the week and slightly below the average of 62.3%. This is remarkable progress for one week and should result in less safrinha corn planted outside the ideal window than what had been anticipated.
There will still be safrinha corn planted outside the ideal planting window, but I am less concerned about delayed planting today compared to several weeks ago.
For farmers in central Brazil still struggling with inadequate soil moisture to plant their soybeans, they may switch their intended safrinha corn acreage to other crops such as grain sorghum, sesame, sunflowers, dry beans or even a cover crop.
Parana - The first corn crop in Parana was 95% planted as of earlier last week which represents an advance of 5% for the week. The corn is 5% germinating, 95% in vegetative development, and is rated 4% average and 96% good.
Parana is the second largest safrinha corn producing state in Brazil and there should be ample time to plant the safrinha corn within the ideal planting widow since the soybeans in the state are being planted in a very timely manner.
